11 things in my closing day toolkit

11 things in my closing day toolkit

Let’s jump right in. I’m all about being realistic, so I’m going to share with you what my list of things I was going to take with me to closing looked like a week before closing and the other list that I put together the night before.

Here is the sweet and aspiration list I put together a week before closing when the anticipation was killing me and I was SOOOO excited about my upcoming projects in the new place:

  • $$$$$ - duh!

  • Sage & Lighter

  • Garment Steamer

  • Tools!

  • Phone Charger

  • Light (work light)

  • Box Fan

  • Paper Towels/Clorox Wipes

  • Notebook & Pen

  • Folding Chair/Pouf/Bean Bag

  • Curiosity & an Open Mind

What happened the day before closing was that I couldn’t find half of the things listed above. So, I settled for the moo-lah, tools, clorox wipes, my notebook and pen, and a little bit of rage.

Rage…you ask? Closing didn’t exactly go as planned, and I didn’t end up getting into my new digs until the following day. I always try to keep the attitude that everything will happen when it’s supposed to, so I tried to keep a level head and a sense of calm that day. It wasn’t my favorite day ever, but it happened…it’s over…and I was cleared to enter the house the next day.

It’s been a helluva year (2020…amiright?), so this day was a pretty big deal to me. In the last year, I had separated, divorced, moved into my grandparents’ old house, my employer changed ownership…TWICE, and I basically felt like that plastic bag in the opening credits of Forrest Gump just floating around wherever life was taking me. So, naturally, walking up to my new house was emotional. I teared up just getting out of the car and approaching the house, but going inside really did me in.

It was a sweet moment that I had carved out to happen alone…on purpose. I wanted this moment just for me, and it was one I will keep with me in the many beautiful memories I know will be made in this house. It’s not a looker just quite yet, but you just wait! It will be the coolest house on the block in no time.
