Things I'm Making Room for in my New Home

I believe that the things we make room for are, by default, our priorities. When looking around my current space, I see things that I love, and I see things that I will need to make space for. I’m not a very sentimental person, so I’m not super into keeping things for nostalgia. However, I am an Enneagram 9, so there are things I feel the need to keep out of obligation. I mean, I have to keep that towel with my name embroidered on it that my grandma bought me for high school graduation, right? Isn’t it silly what we talk ourselves into keeping? I have so many other objects to remember her by (like a photograph…remember those? or the book she used to read me when I visited her house). So, I definitely do not need a towel that she gifted me over 10 years ago.

I know that she would want me to use that space (it’s a very large towel) for something I really love. Or even just some room to breathe! Not everyone is moving in the next 6 months (please, God let it be more like 2), but I encourage you to make a moving list anyway. What is your list of things you will take with you? Let me know some of your items in the comments, and in the meantime, here is my list:

  • Piano & Other Instruments - Guys…I played percussion growing up, and I just can’t shake the desire to buy every weird instrument or old drum I come across at an estate sale. I have a drumset (which I don’t have room to setup in the new space, but it will be coming with me), an upright piano, a cajon that my dad built and gifted me for Christmas a few years ago (he is super talented in the building department), an acoustic guitar, and numerous hand-held percission instruments. Surprisingly, no cowbell!

  • Board Games & Puzzles - These are a few of my favorite things (good luck getting that out of your head)! I really love board games and jigsaw puzzles. They are my favorite weekend or after dinner weeknight activity. I super love the actually vintage or vintage-look games like this version of Monopoly. Some of my other favorites are Sorry!, SET, Bananagrams, and card games. Check out these cute decks here and here.

  • Giant Chalkboard - I found this beautiful, dark blue beauty on a thrifting trip one day. Everything in the store was half price, so I got it for $25, which blew my mind! It is definitely getting a spot in my home office/gym in the new house. Due to its size and weight, it will probably secure its spot in the room before most of the furniture.

  • The Rooster Picture - Thrift stores are pretty normal on the weekend circuit for my family. One fatefull day, my dad called me over to the home decor section and showed me the most glorious piece of art I have ever laid eyes on. This piece is all inlaid felt (yes, you read that right). Bonus: it’s basically all my favorite colors, so it has inspired my whole-house color pallet for the new place!

  • Home Gym - As I mentioned earlier, this space will be sharing a room with the future home office (thanks COVID). I truly love working from home, but I also recognize that the precious breaks I spend getting up from my desk are best spent doing a few squats or shoulder presses for me to keep my sanity. I’m actually pretty excited to have these two spaces sharing a room in the new house, and I’m really pumped (get it?!?) to get creative with organization solutions to keep everything organized. Check out my Pinterest board for this room here.

  • A Place to be Creative - This space is so incredibly important to me. Whether I’m working on my new favorite: paint-by-numbers (fave designs on this Etsy shop); painting, giving a DIY makeover to something I found at a thrift store, or reviving punch needling (guys…have you heard of this??? I’m dying to try it), I need a space that inspires me to get those creative juices flowing. Right now, I have a detached garage for those large or dirtier projects (read: spray paint everything I can get my hands on). I am also hoping to have an easel on my enclosed front porch for painting. The room is small, but two entire walls are windows, so I think it will be dreamy to sit here and paint on the weekends! For smaller projects, I am planning on having some sort of convertible table in the office/gym that can be expanded when larger projects are underway.

What posessions are worth it to move and keep to you? Leave me a comment and let me know what you are prioritizing these days! I would love to hear from you.
